Waitlist Ticket Types & Their Confirmation Priority

Based on some predefined rules, when a ticket is not confirmed, the railway allocates different types of waitlist quota to tickets.

GNWL (General Waiting List): Validation of the GNWL ticket is of the highest priority. If you start your journey from a station near the source train station and end your journey at a station close to the destination train station, you can get a GNWL quota.

CKWL (Tatkal Waiting List): If you book your ticket under a tatkal limit, you will be given CKWL status when tickets are unreserved. Please note that first GNWL and then CKWL tickets will be confirmed. Therefore, there is a high degree of probability that a CKWL ticket will not be confirmed.

Apart from these two popular waiting list quotas in long distance trains, Indian Railways has also defined some other waiting list quotas in short distance trains like:

  • RLWL (Remote Location Waiting List),
  • RQWL (Request Waiting List),
  • PQWL (Pooled Quota Waiting List),
  • RLGN (Remote Location General Waiting List)
  • RSWL (Short Distance Sleeping Quota)
  • (Roadside Station Waiting List).

For most types of waitlist tickets, the chances of a confirmed seat is very low.

Types of trains in India

Metro Trains: These trains offer a wide range of amenities including advanced technology. It operates in only a few Indian metros: Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata. These metro trains are in demand and the government has also planned to expand in other metro cities. Since one cannot reserve a seat on these trains, Metro Rail tickets do not produce a unique PNR number. They are moderately fast and typically arrives on time.

Passenger Trains: Passenger trains can also be further classified as slow and fast passenger trains. Slow passenger trains have a stop between their route at every single station. They run between important tiny distant cities. Tickets are not reserved and thus the generation of a specific pnr number for tickets is not done.

Suburban locals: they just run in a few major Indian cities like Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. These are also examples of trains for which it is not possible to reserve a seat and therefore it is not possible to obtain pnr status for tickets. These are divided further into slow locals and fast locals. Slow trains stops at every stop while fast ones stops only at the most important stations.

Shatabdi and Janshatabdi Express Trains: These are high speed trains primarily used to connect major cities with minor stations across India. They don’t have coaches for sleepers. They just have seats for sitting. The major difference between Shatabdi and Janshatabdi is that both AC and non-AC are available on Janshatabdi while Shatabdi is fully air-conditioned. The seats can be reserved and the pnr status can be checked.

Express & Super-fast Express: these trains are comparatively faster than the ones described above. They run long distances and on these trains you can book a reservation ticket. As seats are booked, the booking system produces a specific 10-digit pnr number for each ticket to identify the traveller. The PNR Status Checking Service is widely available for train tickets that are not reserved.

Rajdhani Express: these trains are fully air-conditioned and connect major Indian cities. High-priority trains generally run on time, but sometimes can run late. They’ve got very few stops between their routes. On these trains, seat reservation facilities are available. One can check the status of Rajdhani Express pnr on this website.

Duranto Express: these are the source to the destination of the train service recently started by the Indian Railway. These trains do not stop at any station on their way from source to destination.

Garib Rath: These trains have AC three-tier coaches and they are quite far cheaper compared to other air-conditioned trains. One can check Train PNR status
